I’m there when the future starts with traineeships.

„Spending time together like this enables you to become friends with your colleagues.“

Deaa Alghazawi is training to become an industrial business manager at First Sensor’s headquarters in Berlin-Oberschöneweide. He shares his personal highlight of the experience and gives us tips on how to start off your career on the right foot.

How did you end up at First Sensor?

I had gone through a number of jobs before. Back home in Syria, I trained in banking and worked at a number of places including a supermarket, a butchers and a tailors. I joined the Federal Volunteers Service when I came to Germany and was eventually given an internship in marketing and controlling. I came across First Sensor in the usual way: I found the advert for training opportunities online, submitted an application and was successful.

You are training to become an industrial business manager. What kinds of things are you learning?

The training program entails changing department roughly every six months. I have already worked in controlling, in HR, and in incoming and outgoing goods. At the moment I’m working in the Customer Support department. I input our customer orders into the ERP system, and monitor the listing and processing of incoming orders. The system is still fairly new so monitoring is important. At vocational college we learn about industrial business processes, for example. We also have social studies. This subject deals with laws, such as the grounds on which a representative body for trainees can be established, what protection against unfair dismissal means and what a works council does. I think it’s important to know what rights and obligations we have as trainees.

You have seen and experienced a lot already – do you like it here?

Yes, I like it here very much. Everything here happens in an orderly manner; everyone knows what they have to do and why. Everyone is very friendly as well, greeting each other with a handshake. And if there is a mix-up or a change is made, people speak to each other and help each other out. That is what “proximity” stands for in the First Sensor Corporate Culture. This proximity is not just reflected in how colleagues talk to our customers over the phone and to each other. The company also organizes events like barbecue evenings and joint sporting activities, and lots of people also get together in their spare time. Spending time together like this – at work and outside work – enables you to become friends with your colleagues. You don’t find this at every company.

What has been your personal highlight so far?

The Trainee Day was a highlight. It was a “One for All” project and we were responsible for it. The task for us trainees at Berlin-Oberschöneweide was to organize a day for all First Sensor trainees and their mentors, across all years and training programs. We wanted to finally get an opportunity to meet and get to know each other, and to present our jobs and locations to the others. It went very well and we had a fantastic day.

What advice would you give to pupils?

Everything is new at first: the company, the people, the jobs, the working hours. But you can rest assured that you won’t be left to figure things out on your own. When other people notice that you are working hard; that you are committed, open-minded and interested; and that you want to learn, they will be willing to help you and explain things – even a second time.
