Autonomous vehicles, intelligent machines or mobile medical technology – optical sensors provide a basis for many exciting technology applications. During this year's Summer School of OpTec-Berlin-Brandenburg (OpTecBB) e.V. under the motto "Photonic Integration", 20 students and junior scientists seized the opportunity to find out about the integration of optically active and passive elements in a sensor system at our headquarters in Berlin-Oberschöneweide, and to get to know First Sensor as an employer.
In addition to a presentation about the company, the visitors enjoyed small-group guided tours through our cleanroom production of sensor chips for optical and MEMS-based sensors. Dr. Klaus Fricke explained which production steps are necessary to build up the fine structures on silicon wafers that enable our chips to convert physical signals into electrical information. In addition, Marcel Hülsemann presented the innovative micro-resonator technology as an example for integrated photonic sensor systems.
During the Summer School from 25 to 29 September 2017, the participants visited a total of five research institutes in Berlin and Frankfurt/Oder. They received practical insights from seven companies that are active in photonics.
